How does it work?

Een DC die over de hoofdhuid wordt aangebracht om de neuronale activiteit te veranderen. Het staat bekend als transcraniële DC-stimulatie (tDCS) en is effectief gebleken in het moduleren van spontane neuronale afvuur. Het toepassen van tDCS met intensiteiten van 1 milliampère gedurende ongeveer 10 minuten heeft aangetoond de sensorimotorische cortex te kunnen exciteren of inhiberen, met effecten die meer dan een uur aanhouden. Excitatie wordt bereikt door anode (+) stimulatie, terwijl inhibitie wordt bereikt door kathode (-) stimulatie. Anode stimulatie heeft ook aangetoond zowel beta- als gamma-activiteit in de visuele cortex te verhogen, terwijl kathode stimulatie beta- en gamma-activiteit heeft verminderd. Stimulatie wordt gegenereerd door een natte doek, wattenbol of spons op de hoofdhuid boven het te behandelen hersengebied te plaatsen en een spons of wattenbol op de schouder of het gezicht. De tDCS-sessies leveren een maximale intensiteit van 2,35 milliampère bij DC. tDCS wordt gebruikt voor de behandeling van vele aandoeningen, waaronder depressie.

VOORZICHTIG: tDCS is zeer krachtig en als het verkeerd wordt toegepast, kan het negatieve bijwerkingen veroorzaken.
